From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by the Mediterranean region and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Anatolia and Europe, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. The sea is technically a part of the Atlantic Ocean, although it is usually identified as a completely separate body of water. The name Mediterranean is derived from the Latin mediterraneus, meaning "inland" or "in the middle of the earth" (from medius, "middle" and terra, "earth"). It covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km² (965,000 sq mi), but its connection to the Atlantic (the Strait of Gibraltar) is only 14 km (8.7 mi) wide. In oceanography, it is sometimes called the Eurafrican Mediterranean Sea or the European Mediterranean Sea to distinguish it from mediterranean seas elsewhere. The Mediterranean Sea has an average depth of 1,500 m (4,900 ft) and the deepest recorded point is 5,267 m (17,280 ft) in the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea. It was an important route for merchants and travelers of ancient times that allowed for trade and cultural exchange between emergent peoples of the region — the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Iberian, Greek, Illyrian, Thracian, Levantine, Gallic, Roman, Arabic, Berber, Jewish , Slavic and Turkish cultures. The history of the Mediterranean region is crucial to understanding the origins and development of many modern societies. "For the three quarters of the globe, the Mediterranean Sea is similarly the uniting element and the centre of World History." GNU Free Documentation License Planning my honeymoon and we are leaning towards a Mediterranean cruise in August, any experience? Q. Our original plan was to just go to Italy, which we ended up deciding may be too expensive once the planning got underway so we started looking at cruises. While researching cruises the other night, came across a few different options for a Mediterranean cruise - each starting and ending in Rome (kinda killing two birds with one stone I guess). Has anyone taken a similar cruise before and what was your experience? Asked by Sunidaze - Fri Oct 5 11:30:05 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would recomend royal caribbean . They have a 12 night cruise on 21 august in the med on the brand new brilliance of the seas. I am 35 and have been on island escape and island star as well as freedom of the seas. Royal caribbean ships are far superior to anything else on the market. Prices for Brilliance start around the 1000 per person. Answered by liz c - Fri Oct 5 12:13:38 2007 Would building a dam across the Strait of Gilbraltar, prevent rising sea levels in the Mediterranean? Q. I know that thousands of years ago the Mediterranean was naturally dammed by an ice wall (and as a result it evaporated). Building a man-made dam would be technically feasible and excessive evaporation could be avoided by simply opening the dam now and then. Would it help the countries that have a Mediterranean coastline avoid rising sea levels? Would cutting the hotter Medterranean off from the rest of the world's oceans would also have a cooling effect on the world's oceans through oceanic currents? Asked by Brian O - Thu Nov 27 16:34:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Little question it might prevent the rising sea level, at the cost of an environmental catastrophe, and the ocean current part of the question would best be handled by a computer model. Answered by Irv S - Thu Nov 27 17:33:40 2008 Whale experts! How come whale's do not range in the Mediterranean area of the world? What stops them?
Q. This has nothing to do with the Bible. I'm asking it for pure scientific reasons. I looked at a whale range and saw that only the Sperm whale enters the Mediterranean area. What is it about these waters that keeps other whales away? Asked by crkadct - Tue Oct 30 21:31:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Probably the food supply, and that's probably mostly the water temperature and ocean current flow. Bodies of water which are mostly landlocked tend to get warmer, and aren't refreshed by major ocean currents.
