A. The key is to look at the sound immediately before /s/ or /z/. Consonants are divided into two categories: voiced (the vocal cords/folds vibrate) and voiceless (no vibration). Generally speaking, a voiced consonant calls for a voiced plural (/z/) and a voiceless consonant for a voiceless plural (/s/). It's the same principle with the additional words you listed--you have to consider the final *sound*, not the final *letter*. The E is silent in "cape" and "cove", so the plural ending follows the voiced/voiceless rule as above for the /p/ and /v/ sounds that end the words. As for "trees", vowels are always voiced. The plural of any word ending in a non-silent vowel that can be pluralized with -s will end in /z/.
