Mechanical
- Stress (mechanics) In continuum mechanics, stress is a measure of the average force per unit area of a surface within a deformable body on which internal forces act. In other words, it is a measure of the intensity of the internal forces acting between particles of a deformable body across imaginary internal surfaces . These internal forces are produced between the, the average amount of force exerted per unit area. It is the internal resistance a material offers to being deformed and is measured in terms of the applied load. The effects of mechanical stress on a polymer can be measured using dynamic mechanical analysis.
- Compressive stress Compressive stress is the stress that, when applied, acts towards the center of that material. When a material is subjected to compressive stress, then this material is under compression. Usually, compressive stress applied to bars, columns, etc. leads to shortening, the stress applied to materials resulting in their compaction. It is the ability of a material to resist being crushed.
- Tensile stress Tensile stress is the stress state leading to expansion; that is, the tensile stress may be increased until the reach of tensile strength, namely the limit state of stress (also referred to as tension) is the stress state leading to expansion.
- Yield stress The yield strength or yield point of a material is defined in engineering and materials science as the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically. Prior to the yield point the material will deform elastically and will return to its original shape when the applied stress is removed. Once the yield point is passed some fraction of the, the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically.
Biological
- Stress (biology) Stress is a term in psychology and biology, first coined in the 1930s, which has in more recent decades become a commonplace of popular parlance. It refers to the consequence of the failure of an organism – human or animal – to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats, whether actual or imagined, physiological or psychological stress; some types include:
- Chronic stress Chronic stress is the response of the brain to unpleasant events for a prolonged period over which an individual perceives he has no control. It involves an endocrine system response in which occurs a release of corticosteroids. This if continuous for a long time can cause damage to an individual's physical and mental health, persistent stress which can lead to illness and mental disorder
- Eustress Eustress is a term coined by endocrinologist Hans Selye which is defined in the model of Richard Lazarus as stress that is healthy, or gives one a feeling of fulfillment or other positive feelings. Eustress is a process of exploring potential gains, positive stress that can lead to improved long-term functioning
- Workplace stress Workplace stress is the harmful physical and emotional response that occurs when there is a poor match between job demands and the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker, stress caused by employment.
Music
- Accent (music) In music, an accent is an emphasis placed on a particular note, either as a result of its context or specifically indicated by an accent mark. Accents contribute to the articulation and prosody of a performance of a musical phrase. Compared to surrounding notes:
- Stress (band) Stress was founded in 1983 by bassist Josquin des Pres and vocalist/guitarist Mike Thomas. They added guitarist Tim Nicholson and went through a number of drummers; most notably Jeff Gabaldon and Leroy Vega . When Nicholson left in early 1985, he was replaced with guitarist Jimmy Crespo, who had previously played with Aerosmith, an early 1980s melodic rock band from San Diego
- Stress (Neo-Psychedelic band) Stress was a very short-lived Neo-Psychedelic rock band that released only one album in 1988 on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records. They are not to be confused with the San Diego rock/metal band Stress from the early 1980s and are sometimes credited as Stress UK in America. Although not a great commercial success, their album was described as possessing, from the late 1980s
- "Stress", a song by French band Justice, from † (album)
- "Stress", a song by Odd Børre Odd Børre Sørensen was a former Norwegian pop singer. He was better known by his stage name of Odd Børre. Internationally he is best known for the song "Stress" that he performed in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1968. He sung in the Kjell Karlsen's Orchestra (1962-70) and was releasing singles during that period. He retired from full, the entrant representing Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 1968
- Stress (musician), an Estonian-born Swiss musician (see: de:Stress (Musiker))
Other
- Stress (game), card game
- Stress (linguistics) In linguistics, stress is the relative emphasis that may be given to certain syllables in a word, or to certain words in a phrase or sentence. The term is also used for similar patterns of phonetic prominence inside syllables. The word accent is sometimes also used with this sense, phonological use of prominence in language
- Stress (journal), a medical journal A medical journal is a scientific journal devoted to the field of medicine. Most medical journals are peer-reviewed. Medical journals commonly arose as the journal of societies, such as the precursor to the British Medical Association, and would originally be collections of letters sent to the society by distant members, with an account of the published by Informa plc. Informa plc is a United Kingdom-based publisher and conference company, with offices in more than 43 countries and more than 8,500 employees. Informa owns numerous brands including Routledge, Lloyd's List, Taylor & Francis, CRC Press, AchieveGlobal, ESI International, and Datamonitor. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a
